HOOK and JACK and ONE HOUR PHOTO (Very important! Help!)

Postby tink3rb3ll on Mon Aug 25, 2008 9:38 pm

I really appreciate Robin William's work, so much so I am doing my A level Film Studies Individual Assignment on him and his performances and the construction of his star image. I am focussing particularly on the three films mentioned in the title of this topic, Hook, Jack and One hour photo and I am looking at how throughout his career he was able to branch himself out from his typical comedic roles to sinister roles such as his One hour photo charater, mediated through him doing films such as Hook which were sort of mid-way, bridge films to allow audiences to get used to and accept him in such a different role because hook deals with moral and serious issues in parts such as the difficulties of fatherhood, stresses of adult life and reconnecting with your childhood. Of course there is significant similarities between films such as Jack and Hook, they are both children's blockbuster type movies, but Hook had an edge to it, i feel, that helped to further William's career into the type of films he is able to do now such as One hour photo, Insomnia or The final Cut but of course he is still able to do his traditional roles in comedic films such as Licence to Wed or even Happy Feet. To get to the point i need to do some primary source research on William's and his roles in these three fillms so i can analyse, break down and comment on his performances and the construction of his stardom and image. Therefore i would greatly appreciate it if people could:
Give me their opinions, reviews etc on these films and William's performance in them.
People could tell me what kind of role they prefer to see him in, comedy or serious and how well you think he is able to carry out more serious roles.
And of course any other comments or information you could give me on these films and Robin William's would be very very useful!
Thank you.

Between comedy and serious roles, I'd prefer comedy. It depends on what you meant by "serious"; I don't like it too much when RW plays villainous roles. IMO, his face is too tragic for those roles, and apart from One Hour Photo, I've never seen any other "bad" role played by RW that has considerable depth. Most of the time, I'd love to see him being sad. The main thing that I really liked about "Jack" is that he struggled to have a normal life; it is rather touching and gives the audience some sort of psychology lesson. This is the same reason why I also liked "Bicentennial Man" (1998) - a robot trying to make love.

His role as Genie in Aladdin certainly added a bunch to his stardom (and you know why). Image? I heard people on this site say that he's friendly - I never heard of anybody being disappointed after meeting him (however, there was this certain person who became less and less enthusiastic about meeting him after she did it too many times ^^). According to Wikipedia, he's known to do quite a bit of charity. He also plays video games and takes part in several popular sports events like Tour de France.

I could probably write a whole book, but I'll save myself and you the time.

I'll be off for a few days and will write some stuff while I'm away. If I send you some stuff on monday, would that still be in time?
Also, I prefer sending it to your email instead of posting it on the forum...

Why Linda, anything is possible in this world. If curses in ancient Egyptian tombs can actually kill people, I don't see how people cannot stop being crazy about an actor. ^_^

I'd love to see that book of yours too. Why don't you go publish it already - I'll be making a line in front of my local Barnes & Noble. I hope the other person doesn't intend to plagiarize it, though. Haha.

Oh and btw, I thought double-posting is prohibited in most forums. Is your forum an exception? So special, I see.

Sorry about the late reply, scott.

What do you mean with Double posting? I know what it is, but I always delete double posts and as far as I know there're currently no double posts on this forum...

I wrote a very short piece about this and will send it to you (lolly pirate) shortly. I had some difficulties with the 3 titles. One Hour Photo is obvious and Jack OR Hook would be good to pick, but why both? When I look at Robin's character in both those films, I see so many similarities and not so many differences. Therefore I had a difficult time writing a longer piece...
I wonder why you didn't pick a film like Awakenings or The Fisher King...the characters he protrays in those films are very different from Hook, Jack & OHP.

No double posting on this forum? Hey Linda, how about this topic?? There is a post of yours at Tue Aug 26, 2008 4:31 am and another one right after. Both are made by you. See for yourself ^^

If I were to use RW movies on an essay, I wouldn't pick Hook. It's not a problem with characters, but rather the atmosphere. It's a little bit childish to be used on a serious essay (well, Jack is childish too, but I think it has more depth). However, if you just focus on the main character and not the setting, both of them are good enough.

I replied to a posts from 2 different people. With double posting I meant 2 exactly the same messages. posting 2 different message meant for 2 different people is no problem at all.
Sometimes people don't know where to post a certain message and decide to post it in multiple categories, that's something I'm trying to avoid.
